Frederick turns to big men in turning back HCC

The Hagerstown Community College men's basketball team got belittled on Friday.

Frederick used its inside game to become the Monsters of the Midcourt, as post players Mike Jackson and Levi Osby combined for 55 points to dominate the paint area and lead the Cougars to a 90-83 victory over HCC.

HCC put up little resistance against the 6-foot-5, 270-pound Jackson, who powered his way to 32 points, while the 6-5, 212-pound Osby used quickness to add 23. All the Hawks had to counter was 6-6, 280-pound Mike Lee, who was saddled with three fouls for much of the game.

"We have been smaller than every team we have played," HCC coach Kenny Keyes said. "We need another big man. It's all on the rebounding ... and we have been getting kicked inside."

It was anything but a small world after all for HCC (4-6).

Frederick made the inside game its top priority in the second half, as Jackson and Osby scored 31 of the Cougars' second-half points.

"That's just how we play everyone," Frederick coach Dave Miller said. "We are an inside-out team. We tried to get the ball inside ... and like you saw, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't."

The times it did work turned the Hawks inside out.

After playing to five ties in the first 8 minutes, 18 seconds of the second half, HCC mounted a 10-2 run to take a seemingly comfortable 68-60 lead with 8:00 remaining.

Frederick (9-4) came out of a timeout with an eight-point run, keyed by 3s from Jalo Webb and Chris Harper to knot the game back at 68-68.

From there, the Cougars pounded the ball inside as Osby scored six points and Jackson added four in an 11-3 run that gave Frederick control of the game.

HCC got within 82-80 with 51 seconds remaining as Thomas Johnson hit a foul shot for one of his team-high 21 points, but Frederick scored eight of the final 11 points with Jackson scoring six consecutive from the foul line.

The Hawks had a shot to tie the game late after Nagee Johnson hit a 3 with 3.5 seconds remaining. HCC called timeout and returned with six players on the floor for a technical foul to seal its fate.

Nagee Johnson finished with 15 for HCC while Rexson Kenley added 14. Lee scored 11, but fouled out with 27 seconds remaining.

"Our big guys have nice offense, but they don't play defense," Keyes said. "The big guys have to step up and become men before we can start winning."
