December 16, 2002

BOYS BASKETBALL

BALTIMORE - Gus Durr hit a baseline jumper with 2 seconds left in the first half to give Archbishop Spalding a lead it never relinquished in a 50-34 win over St. Maria Goretti in the Baltimore Catholic League on Sunday.

Spalding took a 25-24 lead on Durr's shot and held the Gaels (3-3, 0-1) to just 10 points in the second half.

"The offense just went to bed," Goretti coach Cokey Robertson said. "We were in the game yet with 3 minutes to play, but we just never could generate any offense in the second half."

Spalding outscored Goretti 18-6 in the final quarter. Fourteen of those points came from the free throw line.

Spalding employed a box-and-1 defense on Goretti's Derrick Davis most of the game and held the Gaels' star to just two points. Mike Nelson led Goretti with nine points and five rebounds.
