Two charged after I-81 chain-reaction accident

December 16, 2002

Five vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction accident Saturday afternoon on Interstate 81, but no one was seriously injured, Maryland State Police said.

Luvena Marie Whiteman, 52, of Woodbridge, Va., was going north on I-81 when she slowed her van to turn into a median crossover about 1/2 mile north of the Halfway Boulevard exit, Trooper Robert Fraley said.

A van following three vehicles behind Whiteman's, driven by Charles B. Lynch, 58, of Lancaster, Pa., hit the vehicle in front of him and set off a chain reaction.

A Dodge Durango that was following Lynch's van swerved into the median to avoid the accident and hit Whiteman's van, Fraley said.

A woman in the vehicle that was struck by Lynch's van was taken to Washington County Hospital after the accident. Elizabeth Dugan, 44, of Martinsburg, W.Va., was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Whiteman was charged with illegally using the crossover, police said.

Lynch was charged with following too closely, police said.
