Man hit by car, hospitalized

December 13, 2002

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A man attempting to cross a busy six-lane road outside of Martinsburg was hit by a car Thursday evening, and taken to the hospital.

The officer who investigated the wreck, West Virginia State Police Trooper J.A. Laing, said he was told by medical personnel that the man's injuries were not life-threatening.

The driver of a 1992 Geo Storm heading east left a 33-foot skid mark on the road, proof the driver tried to prevent hitting the man, who crossed five of six lanes of Apple Harvest Drive before he was hit, Laing said. He was hit in front of the Lowe's/Kmart plaza, and rolled onto the Geo's hood, Laing said. The accident happened around 6:22 p.m.

The driver was not cited. Laing said he believes the driver was going at or near the posted speed limit.

The man's name and condition were not available Thursday night.
