Judge's request for court reporter approved

The Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday unanimously approved a request from Circuit Judge Frederick C. Wright to hire a court reporter.

The court reporter will be funded through savings from the elimination of two county-funded law clerk positions, which are now funded by the state.

State law requires the savings to be used for court or related public safety items, according to county documents.

Wright said the position is needed because of a 70 percent increase in caseloads in Circuit Court. The new position will cost about $30,000.

Wright said he would not request any additional personnel in the 2004 fiscal year budget.

Bids for industrial equipment approved

The Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday approved several bids for industrial equipment for the Washington County Highway Department totaling $774,187.

Included in the bids are new crew cabs, dump trucks, tractors and other equipment.

The bids were approved by a unanimous vote.
