  • Russell Hartley, superintendent of distribution of the Municipal Electric Light Plant, said there are approximately 1,100 bulbs on the tree in Public Square and approximately 1,000 more bulbs are used to decorate the square.

    The tree in Washington Square has 800 bulbs, the tree at the Dual Highway entrance to the city has 550 bulbs, and the tree on City Park Lake has 600 bulbs, for a total of about 4,050 bulbs.

  • "Fast Freight Rolling," a 20-minute film in color, which was made especially for the 100th anniversary of the Western Maryland Railway, will be shown at Henry's Theatre today through Wednesday.

    The movie depicts the history of the Western Maryland. Many of the scenes were filmed in the Hagerstown yards.

  • A total of 129 buck deer were felled in Washington County during the six-day season that closed Saturday. This is 14 less than the total number slain in the county in 1951.

  • An overnight low of 12 degrees was reported at the fruit laboratory in Hancock, while Boonsboro weather observer J. Howard Beckenbaugh recorded a low of 13.

  • City-county cooperation is continuing in various ways, even though the occasional exception to this rule sometimes creates excitement.

    Marty Snook, president of the County Commissioners, cites the way county and Hagerstown authorities have cooperated recently to provide more efficient road and street plowing. Both city and county snow removal workers will continue plowing when they encounter or cross areas outside of their jurisdictions.

  • Federal environmental officials are threatening to sue Hagerstown and 44 other local governments in Maryland for failing to meet clean water laws.

    Environmental Protection agency officials say Hagerstown's sewage treatment plant didn't meet a July 1 deadline to comply with a 1972 water pollution law.
