SMITHSBURG - Katy Powell had 25 points, nine steals, nine rebounds and six assists as Smithsburg ran away with a season-opening 62-40 victory over the Boonsboro Warriors on Tuesday night in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League girls basketball game.

"I think that we came out a little bit nervous at the start," Powell said. "In the second half, we got into the flow a little bit. We started to finish our shots, run the court better and improve our defense. Overall, I am pretty pleased with our intensity and effort for the first game of the year."

Heather Bywaters scored 14 points and Julie Weaver added eight rebounds for Smithsburg. Candace Stanford made five steals and Jessica Yu blocked three shots for Smithsburg.

"We got the rebound, made the outlet pass, pushed the ball down the court and got the easy layup," Smithsburg coach Jimmy Powell said. "We had four new starters out there. We have 13 players on the team and only Katy (Powell) and Laura Best have played varsity basketball before."

Brittaney Selby scored 18 points for Boonsboro and Sarah Harris grabbed 18 rebounds. Priscilla Myers added seven rebounds and four blocked shots, while Sara Beth Williams also had seven rebounds for the Warriors.

"Sarah Harris is just a super jumper," Boonsboro coach Bernie Semler said. "When she gets off of the floor, she can elevate over everybody. Brittaney Selby did a good job of scoring for us tonight."
