Washington County's unemployment rate remained at 3.6 percent in October, according to preliminary estimates from the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

The unemployment rate probably stayed steady thanks to businesses gearing up for the holiday shopping season, said Job Service Supervisor Bill Kelly with the Labor Department's Hagerstown office.

The number of employed people increased 1,018 people to 68,652 in October. The civilian labor force increased by 1,051 people to 71,205.

There were 2,553 unemployed people in the county in October, compared with 2,520 jobless people in September.

Frederick County's unemployment rate improved from 2.7 percent in September to 2.5 percent in October.

Statewide, the jobless rate went from 3.9 percent to 3.8 percent in October.

The national unemployment rate in October was 5.3 percent.
