James E. Sherrill Sr.

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - James E. Sherrill Sr., 78, of 13302 Ridge Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Dec. 1, 1924, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of the late Rev. V.R. and Willie B. Boone Sherrill.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Marie Spiker Sherrill, in 1992. They were married April 24, 1945.

He worked as a welder pipefitter for Beaver Mechanical Construction Co. in Hagerstown, retiring in 1986.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the European Theater.

He was a member of Church of God of Prophecy in Sabillasville, Md.

He attended Antrim Assembly of God Church in Greencastle.

He was a member of National AARP.

He is survived by his stepmother, Helen B. Sherrill of Lewes, Del.; two daughters, Linda J. Smith of Greencastle, and Connie M. Mowen of Waynesboro, Pa.; five sons, James E. Sherrill Jr. of Waynesboro, Paul E. Sherrill and Virgil T. Sherrill, both of Greencastle, Larry L. Sherrill of Drakes Branch, Va., and Donald L. Sherrill of Mercersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Mary L. Hartman of Knoxville, Tenn., and Carol J. Davis of Canton, Ohio; two brothers, Virgil E. Sherrill of Hustontown, Pa., and Robert L. Sherrill of North Matewan, W.Va.; two stepsisters, Betty Snow of Lewes, and JoAnn Rohn of Dover, Del.; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clayton C. Sherrill and William D. Sherrill.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Antrim Assembly of God Church, Greencastle. The Revs. Rodger Berkey and Harry Lambert will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg, with military honors by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 of Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, Greencastle; and Monday at 10 a.m. at the church.

Mona M. Hollida

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mona M. Hollida, 88, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Silver Age Services.

Born July 19, 1914, in Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Daniel Holland Moler and Bessie Kay Hardesty Moler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warner L. Hollida.

She was a 1935 graduate of Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

She was a member of DAR; Norborne Garden Club; Jefferson County Historical Society; and Molers CEO's.

She is survived by a son, Jerry L. Hollida of Miami; a sister, C. Ione Moler VanMetre of Shepherdstown; a grandson; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Thelma Conte; and three brothers, Holland Kerfoot, Emmert Griffith and Daniel Broaddus Moler.

Services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. James D. Riley Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.




Alta M. Whittington

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -Alta May "Timmie" Whittington, 78, of Shepherdstown, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Nov. 27, 1924, in Dargan, she was the daughter of the late George Robert and Ethel Lee Bennett Stewart.

She was a member of Galilean Baptist Church in Shepherdstown.

She is survived by her husband, John Russell "Russ" Whittington; one sister, Annie E. Collis of Gerrardstown, W.Va.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Stewart and Frank Stewart.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. Pastors William Long and Charles Grower will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles E. Kretzer Jr.

Charles E. "Sonny" Kretzer Jr., 62, of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at his home.

Born May 4, 1940, in Hagers-town, he was the son of the late Charles E. Kretzer Sr. and Helen Virginia Edwards Kretzer.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a Protestant.

He played in the Hub City Softball League; and bowled in the Ruritan League, the Flying Feather League and the Sunday Night Mixers.

He is survived by his wife, Mary J. Rhodes Kretzer; one daughter, Sheila M. Burger of Hagerstown; four sons, Kenneth E. Kretzer of Martinsburg, W.Va., Charles E. Kretzer and Kevin L. Kretzer, both of Hagerstown, and Edward W. Rhodes of Morgantown, W.Va.; four sisters, Anna M. Koontz of Coseytown, Pa., Janet M. Swope of Fairplay, Connie J. Burgan of Sharpsburg, and Mary E. Shipley of Williamsport; four brothers, Robert L. Kretzer and Donald N. Kretzer, both of Hagerstown, Gary W. Kretzer of Marlowe, W.Va., and Daniel R. Kretzer of Sharpsburg; three granddaughters; and four grandsons.
