Decking halls for holiday tour

December 06, 2002|by KATE COLEMAN

Home for the holidays?

How about other people's homes?

The holidays are not quite here, but on Sunday, Dec. 8, you'll have a chance to step inside and look around six North Hagerstown residences.

Their owners are opening the doors and providing a public peek.

The bottom line is the North Hagerstown High School's junior class' bottom line.

The project is a fund-raiser for this year's prom - the juniors' gift to the senior class, says Lindsey Schoeck, 16, junior class president.

Some homeowners have a direct link to students. They are parents of class members. Others, Carol and Jerry Austin for example, have no connection to the class of 2004.

For Carol Winebrenner Austin, interior designer and owner of Carol Interiors, the house tour is an opportunity to show her handiwork. The Austins opened their home to the first junior-class-sponsored house tour two years ago. They had about 400 visitors, Carol Austin says.

The homeowners won't be home alone.

A staff of more than a dozen student and a dozen adult volunteers will be on hand at the six homes - all within five minutes of each other, says Teresa Schoeck, parent coordinator.

The house tour numbers - 1 to 6 - will be posted in front of each residence. Tickets will be available at each house, and the accompanying tour brochure includes a simple map.

The homes can be visited in any order. You don't have to start at No. 1, and Teresa Schoeck hopes you don't. Traffic flow will be better if the visits are staggered.
