Santa Claus pays visit to library in Hagerstown



Santa Claus is returning to the Washington County Free Library in Hagerstown today from 6:30 until 8 pm.

Kevin Rawlings, an expert on the history of Santa, brings to life the "jolly old elf" with his long white beard and his knowledge of Santas past and present.

Teens invited to attend Friday's Open Mic Night



The Teen Advisory Board and the Washington County Free Library are sponsoring an Open Mic Night for teenagers ages 13 through 18, Friday at the Washington County Free Library in Hagerstown.

Open Mic Night gives teenagers the opportunity to recite poetry, read their stories, dance, play their own compositions and sing.

The program will be held in the B-C Meeting Room. Access will be through the door onto the parking lot off Antietam Street.

HCC hosting free Career Night Jan. 8



Hagerstown Community College's Center for Continuing Education will host a free Career Night on Wednesday, Jan. 8, between 4 and 7:30 p.m. at the HCC Valley Mall Center, in the mall offices wing across from The Gap.

The "Careers in Less Than a Year" Career Night will focus on careers that take less than one year of course work to complete.

Instructors and course coordinators will be available to answer questions on the following courses: Real Estate Licensing, Medication Training for Assisted Living, Nursing Home Medicine Aid, Pharmacy Technician, Travel Agent Training, Manicurist Licensing, Medical/Dental Office Assistant, Real Estate Appraisal, CNC Operator, Income Tax Preparation Specialist, Mortgage Loan Officer Training, Insurance Pre-licensing, Microsoft Office User Specialist, A+ Service Technician, Microsoft Certified System Engineer, Cisco Certified Network Associate, Truck Driver Training, Lead Paint Maintenance and Supervisor, Life Guard Certification, Certified Pool Operators and more.

Student work displayed during HCC art show



Hagerstown Community College will hold a student art show Monday through Friday in the Kepler Theater lobby.

Current HCC art students will display original ceramics, computer graphics, photographs, paintings, digital graphics, sculpture and 2-D design. Select pieces will be for sale.

The public can meet the artists at a reception Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the theater.

The Saint Maria Goretti Board of Trustees and Development Committee will host local artist R. Benjamin Jones at a reception and showing Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.

A portion of the show's proceeds will be donated to the Goretti Fund.

Jones studied at the Maryland Institute of Fine Arts in Baltimore, the University of Maryland and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

The lower classrooms and front hallways of Goretti will be filled with Jones' work. Raffle tickets are available for an original painting and are on sale through the Development Office.

The winner will be drawn at the show Saturday and need not be present to win. Cost per ticket is $20.
