Westview razing set for early December

November 29, 2002

HAGERSTOWN - Demolition of the Westview Homes public housing complex is scheduled to start about Dec. 10, a Hagerstown Housing Authority official said Wednesday.

Westview Homes is being demolished and replaced by a class-integrated neighborhood that Hagerstown Housing Authority officials says should reinvigorate the West End community and better the city at large. The new project is to be called Gateway Crossing.

Contractor Harkin Builders Inc. of Marriotsville, Md., is expected to bring construction equipment to the site about Dec. 2, Authority Grants Coordinator Ron Nair said Wednesday.

Demolition will start on the part of Westview Homes that is along Main Avenue and Lanvale Street, Nair said. Demolition of that section should be finished by mid-January, he said.

Construction of the first phase of Gateway Crossing is scheduled to start about mid-January, Nair said. The first phase includes the construction of 83 new homes and a new community center at Elgin Park, he said.

During the demolition period construction vehicles will travel Washington Street from Interstate 81 and enter the demolition site by way of Nottingham Road to Buena Vista Avenue and will leave the area via Buena Vista to Devonshire Avenue, Executive Director Ted Shankle said.
