Sheriff's Dept. gets grant for property clerk

The Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a $34,000 grant awarded to the Washington County Sheriff's Department for civilian investigator/property clerk.

The grant was made possible by the Maryland State Police Cease Fire Council.

The clerk, who has already been hired, disposes of seized rifles, shotguns and handguns. The clerk also will implement a new weapons property tracking system that will maintain, track and store those weapons.

Annual renewal of the grant will depend on future availability.

Lt. Randy Wilkinson said the department formerly used a corporal to carry out the clerk's duties.

Snook said the commissioners will meet with state police Western Regional Commander Maj. Vernon Herron to discuss a decrease in the number of road troopers at the barrack.

The commissioners have said the drop in local troopers means the Washington County Sheriff's Department has had to pick up more calls.
