John L. Miller

John L. "Sparky" Miller, 77, of 862 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 2, 1925, in Carlisle, Pa., he was the son of the late Leroy P. and Florence M. Schlichter Miller.

He began his employment in 1949 with the Pennsylvania Railroad and retired in 1985 from Conrail.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Stevenson and the USS Halligan.

He was a member of AARP and Loyal Order of Moose.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Miller; two sons, Randy L. Miller of Dauphin, Pa., and Roger L. Miller of Washington, D.C.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard G. Hembrock will officiate.

Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family requests the omission of flowers.




Charles I. Brown

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Charles I. Brown, 62, of 4348 Road Old 126, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 6, 1940, in Millen, Ga., he was the son of the late George Ivey and Annie Janett Sherrod Brown.

He worked at Mellott Wood Preserving as a wood treater.

He was a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church, Needmore, Pa.

He was a member of McConnellsburg (Pa.) American Legion Post 561, and Crystal Springs VFW.

He is survived by his wife, Leona Clark Brown; one daughter, Susan Anderson of Berryville, Va.; one half sister, Audry G. Sherrod of Savannah, Ga.; and one granddaughter.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, Needmore. The Rev. Denver Plessinger will officiate. Burial will be in Union Memorial Cemetery, Breezewood, Pa.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, McConnellsburg.




Mae F. Palmer

SPRINGFIELD, Va. - Mae Fogler Palmer, 96, of 5210 Milland St., and formerly of Bradbury Avenue, Smithsburg, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at Sleepy Hollow Manor, Annandale, Va.

Born Sept. 30, 1906, in Smithsburg, she was the daughter of the late Franklin Geiser and May Besore Fogler.

Her husband, Maurice W. Palmer, died in 1994.

She was a graduate of Towson University, formerly Towson Normal School.

She was a member of St. Peter's (Beard's) Lutheran Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Maurita M. Smith; one grandson, Michael T. Smith; and one granddaughter, Michele L. Haley.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. The Rev. Carroll L. Boyer will officiate. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

There will be no viewing.

The family will receive friends one half-hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Annette Y. Stine

Annette Yvonne Harbaugh Stine, 65, of West Church Street, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, as a result of an automobile accident in Texas.

Born April 22, 1937, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Agnes Bryan.

She died the same day as her husband, Robert Arthur Stine.

She was a member of the Salvation Army, where she was secretary of the Home League, was a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, prepared meals for the advisory board and lunch program, was a member of League of Mercy, participated in the Christmas kettle drive, was on the welcoming committee for new officers, organized the Christmas bazaar and was assistant YPSM. She also volunteered at Salem Avenue School.

She is survived by two sons, Michael Stine and Robert A. Stine, both of Hagerstown; two brothers, Richard Harbaugh and Donald Harbaugh, both of Hagerstown; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Timothy Stine; and one grandson.

Memorial services will be held at the Salvation Army at a time to be announced later. Capt. Butch Mallard will officiate.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 534 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, MD

Jesse D. Jenkins

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Jesse Donald Jenkins, 72, of Shepherdstown, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Nov. 27, 1929, in Moorefield, W.Va., he was the son of the late Jesse J. and Edna M. Jenkins.

He received his bachelor's degree from Shepherd College and his master's degree from George Washington University.

He taught school in Mineral, Grant, Jefferson and Berkeley counties. His last position was the principalship at Winchester Avenue School.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.
