Chambersburg parade draws a crowd

November 25, 2002|by CANDICE BOSELY

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Jim Resh said he could not even begin to estimate how many people turned out for the annual Christmas parade in downtown Chambersburg on Saturday evening.

Parade-goers were lined up several deep along the mile-long route, cheering as 20 to 25 floats and marching bands went by, he said. One float featured a living nativity scene.

"It was a huge crowd," said Resh, who has handled the parade lineup for 20 years. He owns a downtown bridal shop.

Even the weather cooperated - after wind died down, he said.

"It seemed like the mood of the parade was so much lighter," Resh said. "(Audience members) were having a ball."

Formerly a daytime parade, the Chambersburg event was switched to the evening to coincide with the holidays.

"The idea was to do a Christmas parade so we could show off the lights," Resh said.
