Blood drives gearing up

certain restrictions apply

November 22, 2002

As the holiday season approaches, the American Red Cross blood drives are gearing up to meet the needs of area hospitals during this traditionally busy time.

Those planning to give blood need to be aware of certain restrictions in donor eligibility requirements for those who have traveled abroad, according to a spokesman in the Greater Alleghenies Region based in Johnstown, Pa.

The Red Cross asks that people not donate blood if since Jan. 1, 1980, to the present:

  • They spent a total of three months or more in any United Kingdom countries, including the Falkland Islands or Gibraltar, or received a blood transfusion there.

  • They spent a total of six months or more in Eastern or Western Europe or received an injection since 1980 of any bovine (beef) insulin in those countries.

For more specific information about the countries on the list call 800-542-5663.
