Tips for JFK 50-mile marathon volunteers

November 21, 2002|by KEVIN CLAPP

  • Layer it up.

Mother Nature is predictable only in her unpredictability, so wear several layers of clothing to shed or pile on as conditions warrant.

  • Brave the early hour for the start ...

Spinnler suggests wiping sleepy dust out of eyes to check out the race beginning in downtown Boonsboro.

"It's a very special thing about to unwind," he says, paraphrasing a description he once read of pre-race anticipation. "It's hard to imagine anything else is going on in the world."

  • ... And hang around for the finish

Watching runners conquer this 50-mile endurance test of strength can become an uplifting, festive experience as music blares and road weary finishers trudge the last few feet at Springfield Middle School in Williamsport.

Spinnler says the triumphant feeling of watching a runner conquer the course can not be beat, and there is a unique opportunity to visit with finishers to hear their stories.

"You walk away buzzing," Spinnler says.
