HCC men improve to 3-0

The Hagerstown Community College men's basketball team must have felt as if it were stuck behind a dump truck in the fast lane on Interstate 70.

The Hawks, who make no secret of their desire to hurry the ball down the court, had to contend with a CCAC/Allegheny-Pittsburgh team that wanted to ride the brakes all night long Saturday at the HCC athletic complex.

HCC eventually did find the gas pedal, got its offense moving and they ran away with a 76-48 victory over the Cougars.

Hagerstown improves its record to 3-0 with the win.

"I think that we played well under the circumstances that the other team slowed down the ball," HCC coach Kenny Keyes said. "It is hard to play against teams that slow it down when you are used to running and gunning. But we adjusted well and we still beat them by 28 points. It was a great team effort. It wasn't just one player, it was everybody on the team."

Freshman guard Rexson Kenley collected 14 points, five assists and four steals for HCC.

"I think that overall we played well as a team," Kenley said. "The chemistry looked good and we were bonding. I feel that I need to pass more to get our team into the game. But I am there to pick our offense up, if it is needed. We're playing pretty well, but we still need to improve on a few things. We need to limit our turnovers and improve our shooting from both the free throw line and the floor."

Nagee Johnson scored a game-high 16 points for HCC. South Hagerstown graduate Mike Lee added 11 points and six rebounds, while Lawrence Wingate scored nine points for the Hawks.

Steven Lee led Pittsburgh with 14 points.

HCC was only leading Pittsburgh by a 13-11 margin with 7:26 remaining in the first half. The Hawks went on an 18-5 spurt over the next five minutes to build a 31-16 lead. The Hawks led 37-22 at halftime.

The Hawks outscored the Cougars 14-8 in the first eight minutes of the second half to raise their lead to 51-30.
