FREDERICK, Md. - A Frederick man died Saturday morning after his hunting partner accidentally shot him when startled by a bird, a Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police spokeswoman said.

Kermit Weedon, 41, of the 5800 block of Planters Court, south of Frederick, died at the scene, DNR spokeswoman Heather Lynch said. He and a companion were rabbit hunting on private land at 4828 E. Basford Road near Adamstown, Md.

Lynch would not release the name of the man who is believed to have shot Weedon. The shooting was still under investigation and no charges had been filed, she said.

The men were standing about 20 feet apart around 8:30 a.m. when a bird flew between them, Lynch said. The second man, who was walking with his finger on the trigger of his shotgun, was startled when the bird flew by and fired as he turned, "hitting his good friend in the chest," Lynch said.

"The safety message here is to never put your finger on the trigger unless you're going to fire," Lynch said.

Weedon's body was taken to the state medical examiner's office in Baltimore for an autopsy, Lynch said.
