Wildcats reach state semifinals (Sunday)

November 11, 2002

OAKLAND, Md. - No. 1 Williamsport took care of business in the Class 1A West final Saturday night, defeating Southern Garrett in straight sets, 15-5, 15-8, 15-3.

"Southern Garrett was a very good passing team, but our girls came out strong and we were able to run our offense very effectively tonight," Wildcats coach Kristi Gee said. "I think that was the key to the game."

Meggie Miller had 22 kills and 22 digs, Lindsey Plotner had 10 kills and five blocks, Staci Grabill had 18 assists and Denise Sullivan added 16 assists for Williamsport (16-1).

"I think they're peaking at the right time," Gee said. "Back when we played Westmar, we struggled with our passing. We worked on it in practice, and it carried over to the semifinal match and the final. I told our kids that if we pass well, everything will fall in line, and I think they truly believe that."

The Wildcats took note of Smithsburg's loss to Poolesville in the 1A South final Friday night, using it to help them stay focused Saturday.

"We discussed that prior to the match," Gee said. "I think our girls had already talked amongst themselves and decided that wasn't going to happen to us. This was for the regional championship, and that meant a lot to them."

Williamsport will play against East champion Perryville Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Essex Community College.
