November 11, 2002

Four area football teams have qualified for state playoff tournaments which will begin next weekend.

The top 4 teams in The Herald-Mail Super 7 - Martinsburg, Middletown, South Hagerstown and Berkeley Springs - will open postseason play either Friday or Saturday.

The West Virginia pairings were officially released Saturday night. Dates and times are not yet determined.

Martinsburg is the No. 2 seed in Class AAA and will play host to No. 15 seed Spring Valley (5-5) in the opening round.

The Bulldogs were 10-0 this season - their first unbeaten year since 1976 - and set a state scoring record with 544 points.

Berkeley Springs earned its first postseason berth, getting in as the No. 13 seed in the Class AA bracket.

The Indians (7-3) will play at Frankfort in the first round. Berkeley Springs lost to Frankfort 26-6 three weeks ago.

The Maryland pairings are not yet official, but the projected opponents for local teams are as follows:

South Hagerstown will be the No. 7 seed in the Class 1A bracket and will most likely travel to Dunbar for a game Saturday afternoon.

South (7-3) completed its third straight winning season Friday night with a 39-0 win over North Hagerstown.

Middletown wrapped up its fifth MVAL title in six years Friday night with a 37-6 win over Walkersville.

The Knights (9-1) will be seeded no higher than No. 7 in the Class 2A playoff bracket.

They will likely play on the road at Edmondson or Hereford.
