Police on Tuesday were calling on the public to help them identify a badly decomposed body found Monday in a wooded area south of Hagerstown.

A hunter notified Maryland State Police in Hagerstown after finding skeletal remains in the woods behind the Park and Ride lot off Md. 65 near Interstate 70, police said.

The body was described as being that of a white male with brown hair. He was wearing brown, size 81/2 medium Rockport shoes, a dark waist-length jacket and khaki-colored pants, said Lt. Bud Frank, a Maryland State Police spokesman in Pikesville.

A pair of gold-rimmed glasses, a green Eastport backpack that contained a green and orange latch-hook pillow, and keys to a Toyota and a General Motors vehicle were found at the scene, Frank said.

No identification was found on the body, which forensic specialists determined had been in the woods for several months, Frank said.

Dr. Rodriguez, a forensic anthropologist with the military, and Dr. Caruso, a forensic pathologist with the Maryland State Medical Examiner's Office, examined the remains on Tuesday, Frank said.

The doctors' first names were not immediately available.

The remains were taken to the state Medical Examiner's office in Baltimore for an autopsy, Frank said.

Troopers have contacted local law enforcement agencies in an attempt to identify any missing persons that have been reported, he said.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the victim may call police at 301-739-2101.
