Playoffs within Rebels' grasp

It's number crunching time for the South Hagerstown football team and by all appearances, the numbers seem to be in the Rebels' favor.

This much is simple for South: Beat North Hagerstown in the Hagerstown Gridiron Championship Classic at School Stadium Friday and earn the school's first berth to the state football tournament.

Even with a loss to the Hubs, the odds are good that South will advance to the playoffs.

The Rebels, however, aren't playing it that way.

"It was the same situation two years ago, at 6-3 and needing a win to get in and we wound up losing (to North), 7-6," South coach Greg Kellick said after his team's 26-25 loss to Middletown last Friday. "We're taking this one very seriously. It's a playoff game for us. The next time we lose, we go home. It's over."

South (6-3) is seventh overall in the Class 1A standings, but exactly where the Rebels will end up in the point standings is anybody's guess. It is possible for the Rebels to finish anywhere from the No. 2 seed and the West region title to ninth place and out of the playoffs altogether.

The loss to Middletown wasn't enough to drop South out of the top eight in the ratings released Tuesday, but it did help Beall to move into the lead for the West region title.

The following are projections as to how the playoff road could go for the Rebels based on the state's official point standings:

  • South wins, Beall beats Westmar - Beall wins the West region and earns a home playoff game; South earns a playoff bid and goes on the road for the first round.

  • South wins, Beall loses to Westmar - South wins the West region and earns a home playoff game; Beall earns a playoff bid and goes on the road for the first round.

  • South loses, Havre de Grace wins, Cambridge-South Dorchester wins - CSD wins the East region title; Havre de Grace could jump into the top eight and bump South if enough of their defeated opponents win.

  • South loses, Havre de Grace wins, Cambridge-South Dorchester loses - Either CSD and Havre de Grace will win the East region, depending on how many of their defeated opponents win. South will battle for the final spot with the team that loses out.
