Duke beats Buck in 54th District

November 06, 2002|by RICHARD BELISLE

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Republican Walter Duke will take over the 54th delegate district seat that was occupied by Democrat Vicki Douglas, after beating Dale Buck, his Democratic opponent, Tuesday, 2,105 to 1,744 votes, according to complete but unofficial returns.

Duke could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.

Buck said he was proud of his campaign, even if he didn't like the results.

"It was a good race," he said. "It wasn't a bad result, given what I've seen tonight in other races. It looks like we're going to send a Republican delegation to Charleston (W.Va.), but I'll support it."

This was Buck's second try at political office. He ran unsuccessfully for Berkeley County prosecutor in 1992.

Buck, 50, a lawyer, lives in Hedgesville, W.Va.

Duke, 55, lives in Martinsburg and teaches at Hedgesville High School.

Douglas decided not to seek re-election.

The 54th District covers all of Martinsburg and parts of Hedgesville.
