This year, the Young Artist Competition will be for advanced middle and high school students of string instruments from across the State of Maryland.


Five finalists will be selected in competition Saturday, Jan. 18, and will then compete in the Winners' Circle Recital, Saturday, Feb. 15. The grand prize winner will be chosen at the end of the recital. The four other finalists will each be awarded a $150 cash scholarship. The grand prize winner will receive a $300 cash scholarship and will perform at the Frederick Orchestra's Young Artist Showcase Concert Sunday, March 9, as the featured guest soloist.

Competitors will be required to play:

  • An unaccompanied compulsory etude as follows: Violin: Kreutzer: Etude No. 2; viola: Kreutzer: Etude No. 2; cello: Bach: Suite No. 1 in G major (prelude only); bass: Saint-Saens: L'Elephant from Carnival of the Animals (Suzuki Vol. 2, pages 24-25). And

  • A concerto or major work for soloist and orchestra. Entrants who choose a concerto are required to perform two contrasting movements from the work.

Entrants are required to engage the services of their own piano accompanist for the concerto portion of the competition.
