Speedway - Stuhler gets monkey off his back

November 04, 2002

Gary Stuhler had won every major late model event that Hagerstown Speedway has had except for one race, the Turbo-Blue Hub-City National 150.

On Sunday, the veteran Greencastle, Pa. driver got the monkey off his back as he grabbed the lead from Steve Francis on the 90th lap, then dominated the final 50 laps to win the 150-lapper.

"I have been trying to win this race for 27 years or so," said Stuhler in Victory Lane. "I am just lucky Francis got loose there in lapped traffic and I was able to get by. The car just kept getting better and better. I thought something might happen there at the end since I have never won this race."

Stuhler picked up $10,000 for the win in the Ninninger owned Rocket Chassis. It was Stuhler's fourth win of the year and his 102nd career win at Hagerstown.

In the 25-lap Hoosier Tire late model sportsman feature, Will Fair, of Littlestown, Pa., scored his first career win and Bryan Kerns of Berryville, Va., recorded his first career win in the 20-lap Ernie's pure stock main event.

The Hub-City National 150 finished the 55th season of racing at the Hagerstown Speedway. On Saturday the speedway will hold its first annual race car flea market. Gates are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Awards Banquet on Dec. 21 will bring the season to an end. Banquet tickets are now on sale at the speedway office.
