Area Roundup - Spartans let lead slip away

FISHERTOWN, Pa. - No. 6 McConnellsburg had undefeated Berlin on the ropes in the District 5, Class A championship game Thursday night, and couldn't put them away in a heart-breaking 15-10, 12-15, 15-12 loss that ended the Spartans' season.

After losing the first game, McConnellsburg (19-2) changed to an outside attack in the middle of Game 2, rallying from a 9-4 deficit to win the game.

Feeding off the momentum, the Spartans took a 12-2 lead in the decisive Game 3 - only to go without a point the rest of the way.

"We're up 12-2 in the last game and couldn't finish," McConnellsburg coach Greg Hays said. "We totally dominated Game 3 and stalled at 12. Champions finish, and we didn't."


Kara Carmack had 13 service points and 16 kills for the Spartans. Steph Paylor had 13 service points, Jade Anthony had 11 kills, Lindsay Lininger had five blocks and Heidi Swope had 22 assists.

No. 4 Hedgesville 3, Fort Hill 0

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Ashley Copenhaver had six blocks and 13 kills for Hedgesville as the Eagles swept Fort Hill, 15-11, 15-2, 15-9.

Keri Jackson added 13 kills and nine service points, while Tracey Regalbuto had 26 assists and nine service points for Hedgesville (29-4). JV: Hedgesville, 2-1.

FREDERICK, Md. - Emily Sykes scored twice unassisted and Lindsay Hoffman scored on an Andrea Zamudio assist for Thomas Johnson (11-3-1) in a Class 4A East quarterfinal.

Beall 5, No. 9 Clear Spring 2

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Lauren Ebersole and Lindsey Keyton scored for Clear Spring (9-6-2) in a 1A West quarterfinal match.

Boonsboro 3, N. Garrett 1

OAKLAND, Md. - Sarah Keyser scored two goals and Steph McGee addded another, as the Warriors won in the Class 1A West quarterfinals.

Haley Burgner made 12 saves for Boonsboro, which hosts Smithsburg in Monday's semifinals. Game time is 7 p.m.

St. John's-PH 2, Friends 0

FREDERICK, Md. - Molly Wilkins and Sarah McCutcheon each scored a goal, Madison Keller recorded an assist and Lindsey Weaver had six saves for St. John's at Prospect Hall (15-2-1) in a victory over Friends School.


North girls win 2A West

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. - McKenzie Fox, Jessica Hanlin and Jenna Line all finished in the top 10 as North Hagerstown's girls won the Class 2A West meet at Centennial High School.

North scored 55 points to defeat Fort Hill by nine and Middletown by 23. Fox finished third in 20 minutes, 36 seconds, while Hanlin was fifth in 20:52. Line finished ninth, Anna Lenhart was 14th and Brittany Pullen was 24th.

Middletown's Rocky Morgan won the race in 20:05.

North's boys also qualified for states, finishing sixth.

Freshman Hemu Arumagum finished second in 17:48, seven seconds behind winner Justin Myers, of Middletown.
