A 47-year-old Hedgesville woman was killed Wednesday night when the 1997 Dodge Intrepid in which she was riding went over an embankment on Buck Hill Road and struck a tree, a spokesman for the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department said.

Sandra Patrick of Back Creek Valley Road was pronounced dead at the scene, said Lt. Dennis Streets.

Patrick was riding in a car being driven by Joseph Duncan, 36, of Inwood, who lost control of the car on Buck Hill Road about a quarter of a mile off W.Va. 45, Streets said.

The car went off the left side of the road, over an embankment and struck a tree head-on, Streets said.

It is believed the crash occurred between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., Streets said.

Duncan crawled up the hill to the edge of Buck Hill Road, where a motorist noticed him and called police, Streets said.

Duncan was not found until about 2:05 a.m., Streets said.

Streets said he is not sure what caused Duncan to lose control of the car, adding that deputies were able to speak to him only briefly.

Streets said Duncan was taken to City Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman said he was listed in good condition Thursday afternoon.

Duncan was charged with failure to maintain control, Streets said.
