Mail Call for 10/31

November 01, 2002

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"The Maryland law states that you have to have your headlights on when you have your windshield wipers on. This is very important when it's raining because it's a safety issue and I see a lot of people driving in the rain with their windshield wipers on but their headlights are off. People should also check to see if they have a headlight or taillight out because this too can cause a problem. A lot of accidents can happen because don't have their lights on and other drivers can't see them."

"I am grateful to all of the people who gave all their effort in order to catch the snipers. I would like to thank the truck driver and Chief Moose for what they both have done. I am also thankful to God and I am thankful that nobody else was hurt."

"I understand that there is work being done downtown. I was downtown on Tuesday and there was a pile of glass lying on the sidewalk in front of the F&M Bank. There should be signs up."

"Here's a big cheer for the new administration at Eastern Elementary. The teachers are doing a great job this year. Congratulations!"

"Why in the world would you want to put Johnnie Cochran on the snipers' case? He got O.J. Simpson off. "

"I am a longtime Washington County resident and taxpayer and I would like to know how much was in John Howard's retirement plan."

"You know, these wannabes who are suing the county over how much money John Howard got, and I want to stress that I wouldn't know him if I walked past him right now, this is ridiculous. It's almost like they are making him out to be dishonest when he didn't do anything wrong. He got what the county wanted to give him for leaving his job and I am sure that he was a victim of politics just like a lot of other good people have been. As a voter, I am not falling for this bull. I know who I want to vote for and their lawsuits aren't going to sway my vote one way or the other."

"I read in the paper where Coach Jim Brown says vote for him for County Commissioner, 'A man with a plan.' Well what kind of plan does he have, he doesn't seem to want to tell anyone. Just because he is an outstanding coach doesn't make him a good administrative man."

"I too wish the City Council would reduce the trash bill by at least half. I would rather them do away with it and pay for it as a civic service. That way, those of us who do itemize could take our trash bill off of our income tax. But the way the city does it, they make us pay more taxes."

"This is for the lady who had a Mail Call who was wondering why the Humane Society wouldn't allow her to adopt when she has six acres of land. I would like to talk to you. Call me at 301-745-3853 so I can talk to you and maybe we can touch base on a few issues and maybe I could get you in touch with someone who does have some animals that need homes."
