Local author publishes book

Susan Pauley Wingerd can hardly contain her pride as she flips through the pages of her new book, "Be Careful What You Wish!"

"I wanted to write a story that would help children appreciate their families and how much they have in their lives," said Wingerd, 41, of Jordan Road in the Fairplay area. "I began writing and it all came to me within a week. Little did I know it would take two years to finish perfecting it, publishing it myself and having it printed. Still, I'd do it all over again."

Not only is Wingerd the author, but she also painted the illustrations herself. Eleven years ago she was using her artistic skills painting artwork on the windows of Hagerstown businesses at Christmastime. Now she's glad to be able to put her talents to use in this book.

The characters in her book are based on her family and the main character, a little boy named Gary, is named after her son. The story begins with Gary making a birthday wish to become an animal. When his wish comes true, then the adventures begin. In the end, Gary learns to be happy with himself and appreciate everyone in his family.

A 1979 graduate of Smithsburg High School, Wingerd works as a barber at Gentlemen's Choice Barbershop in Frederick, Md.

"My customers have been hearing about my book for a long time now," Wingerd said. "It's very gratifying to have some of my young customers come in and say 'Miss Sue, I really liked reading your book!'

"I think this is a million dollar story and wherever God takes it, I'll be satisfied. This book is a legacy to leave behind for my son."

"Be Careful What You Wish!" comes with a CD of Wingerd reading the story and is available at these local stores: Shepherd's Table in Hagerstown and Frederick, Fahrney's Hallmark in the South End Shopping Center, Paper Plus on Dual Highway, Pictures & Pages in Funkstown and Turn the Page in Boonsboro.
