Delegate District 3B: Rick Weldon

October 30, 2002|By

Although District 3B lies primarily in Frederick County and includes only a couple of thousand Washington County voters, we still view the race with interest because the winner will have a seat on the Washington County delegation, meaning his or her vote will count the same as our own resident delegates and senator.

Democrat Lisa Baugher, a homemaker and small farmer, made a name for herself when she took on the big power conglomerate Duke Energy, which had plans to build a generating plant on the Potomac.

Her energy and organization are impressive and would have been a good lead in to local office. But for a state seat, we're choosing the candidate with the more well-rounded resume, Republican Rick Weldon.

Weldon served as town manager of Brunswick and then moved on to become the de facto city manager of Frederick under Mayor Jim Grimes and to an appointed County Commissioner seat.

With budgets being such a big concern in Annapolis, it's a good idea to fall back on a person with budgetary experience who can hit the ground running upon entering office.

We do not diminish Baugher's activism in an era when too few people want to get involved, but we think Weldon's successful track record gives him the edge and would make him a solid contributor to our local delegation.
