Area roundup - Spartans set for district finals

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - No. 6 McConnellsburg advanced to the finals of the PIAA District 5 Class A volleyball tournament with a 15-3, 15-6 quaterfinals win over Shade and a 10-15, 15-9, 15-8 semifinals victory over Southern Fulton on Tuesday.

The Spartans (19-1), seeded second, will now face top-seed Berlin (21-0) for the district championship Thursday at 7 p.m. at Chestnut Ridge.

Jade Anthony had 26 service points and 12 kills, Steph Paylor had 12 service points and 10 kills, Kara Carmack had 21 kills, Lindsey Lininger had 13 kills and Heidi Swope had 43 kill assists for McConnellsburg.

Southern Fulton was a 15-11, 17-15 quarterfinals winner over Tussey Mt.

No. 4 Hedgesville wins tri-meet

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Hedgesville defeated Hampshire 15-4, 15-4 and St. Maria Goretti 15-1, 15-2 in a tri-meet.


Ashley Copenhaver recorded eight kills, three blocks and 19 service points, Keri Jackson had six kills, two blocks and eight service points and Tracy Regalbuto added 19 assists for Hedgesville (33-4-7). JV: Hedgesville 2, Hampshire 0; Hedgesville 2, Goretti 0.


Grace Academy 11, Montrose 3

Jared Barnhart scored four goals and recorded four assists, Ryan Myers added four goals and Jordan Hanft had a goal and an assist for Grace in the first round ACSI playoff victory. A.J. Serafini and Steven Rushing each added a goal and Doug O'Neil recorded an assist for Grace.

St. John's-PH 3, Notre Dame 3

MIDDLEBURG, Va. - Jeremy Hess had two goals while Sam Weaver added another for St. John'sat Prospect Hall (6-8-1).

Keepers Tommy Kelly and Fred Phelan combined for five saves for St. John's.


Shepherd 3, UDC 0

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Kim Pirisino had 14 kills, 21 digs and six blocks and Danielle Munson had 14 kills, 19 digs, four blocks and three aces for Shepherd in the 30-26, 30-24, 30-25 sweep of UDC. Judy Whims added 11 kills and 14 digs and Nicole Morgan had 48 assists for Shepherd (26-8).


Shepherd 11, Gallaudet 1

WASHINGTON - Jamie Ritchie and Chad Guthrie each had two goals and two assists and Dan Merold added two goals for Shepherd, as the Rams set a single-game scoring record with 11 goals.

Pedro Prudencio had a goal and an assist, Noah Stewart, Sean Holland, Donald Fon and Chuck Moore each had a goal and Michael Watson and Jose Ventura each added an assist. Robert Pence recorded five saves in goal for Shepherd, whcih improves to 10-2, breaking the school's single-season win mark set in 1994 and 1996.

D.J. Rowse scored unassisted for Gallaudet (2-17) while Nathan Barnes had four saves in goal.


Boonsboro 44, North Hagerstown 16

Adam Rippeon rushed for 225 yards and scored four touchdowns while Jeremiah Mills had three interceptions and a touchdown run, Matt Rhoderick ran for a touchdown and Zach Shoemaker had eight tackles for Boonsboro (6-1-1).

Jarell Rodriquez passed for 160 yards with a touchdown to each Pat Dattilio and Mark Lancaster for North (4-4).
