Mail Call for 10/29

October 30, 2002

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"All this concern about the flags flying 24/7 at the Clear Spring Elementary School. I have a question. I always thought that the flag could fly at night as long as it had a spotlight on it. Am I wrong? Where did I get this idea? Does anyone know? I would appreciate getting the right information on this."

"I would like to reply to the person in Boonsboro who wants to know, quote: 'What is the time limit you are allowed to keep a car in the driveway without tags on it. I would think there would be a time limit.' My response to you is if it's not in your driveway - it's not your car - what's it any of your business? There you go, watching every move your neighbor makes - thinking they left a car in the driveway too long without tags - trying to cause a little trouble for 'em, aren't you? You know what? You should treat your neighbor the way you would like to be treated. Those that live in glass houses should not throw stones. Mind your own business. None of your business about the tags."

"What I'd like to know is why we have a White House in pristine condition for foreign dignitaries to meet. So why should taxpayers foot the bill to remodel and revamp his Texas ranch. If Mr. Bush is not satisfied with the White House, I know who is."

"Good morning, Mail Call. Three cheers for the person who called in with the two good reasons not to vote for Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. Let's hear it from all of you more. Second, the people who just got caught in the sniper attack - if they turn out to be proven against them - I say guns don't kill people, people kill people."

"I watched the Chamber of Commerce forum on TV. Jim Brown says he has a dream. The county commissioners job is to work for the taxpayers of Washington County, not to have a dream about himself. A taxpayer."

"I am calling to ask where Larry Yanos' articles have been in the paper. He always had an article in the Sunday paper about horse racing. I really miss that. He's a very good editor. If you could leave an editor's note or something along with this message in Mail Call, I'd appreciate it. We really miss you, Larry."

"This call is about the woman who faces a murder charge after giving birth to her baby in the bathtub. She is now in Washington County Detention Center on $400,000 bond. But what about the woman who goes to an abortion clinic to get rid of her baby? Is there a $400,000 bond against the clinic? The most vicious of men who are arrested are never given that high of a bond."

"I hope that they turn the sniper suspects over to Alabama authorities so they can get the death penalty. Otherwise, if they stay in Maryland and Kathleen Townsend is elected, they'll be released within four years. I guarantee it."

"I think that concerning the sniper suspects, they've already got them and everything, but they still haven't really proved it on them. Now, I think it's time for them to get Johnnie Cochran - that's the same guy that got the other guy off - O.J. So, I think Johnnie should devote his time for these two. At least let him talk to them and see if they were guilty or not, see if he can help them in any way."

"How can a nonprofit organization such as Parent-Child Center have a fund-raising dinner with Ehrlich's wife a couple of weeks before the election, where she gives a campaign speech - the night after her husband has been in town for a fund-raiser - thanking everybody for attending the previous night's fund-raiser? I thought Parent-Child Center was a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization."

"Kathleen Kennedy Townsend keeps up all this talk about gun control laws, but doesn't realize that we have way too many in Maryland already. Gun control has failed in Australia and Canada. She is just trying to ride on her father's and uncle's pigtails. Ehrlich is definitely my choice for governor because I don't believe she has any ideas of her own. She scares me a lot."

"I'd like to say thank you to the Maryland State Police, the Montgomery County Police, District of Columbia and all of the police in Virginia who were involved in the sniper case. It's my way of saying thanks, job well done. And for the people who don't think they did anything, the next time you see one setting along the road and you say he's reading a magazine or eating a doughnut, just remember, he could be watching or doing exactly what he's trained to do."

"I have a question for Washington County commissioner candidate Jim Brown. You claim you have a plan for success, but you don't explain how you are going to accomplish any of those goals. What is your plan?"

"I would like to know why Vicki Nelson hasn't removed a very prominent sign that she has just outside of Funkstown, I believe close to South Pointe? The primary election is over and it should have been moved a long time ago. I would like to see that sign taken down. Thank you."

"Yes, I would like to know if Tommy Bowers, who is running for sheriff, thinks he is applying for a policeman's job or if he is applying for the administrative job of sheriff. 'Getting down into the trenches' is not what I believe the sheriff should be doing. His job is more administrative."

"Another big reason we have to get a handle on people coming into this country illegally. One of the sniper suspects was an illegal immigrant - the young one. And while I'm on this topic, I've talked to a lot of friends and we all feel the same way. Nothing but the death penalty for these people if they are proved guilty. They deserve it, and the best way to do it is shoot them right through the head."
