Area roundup - Jefferson girls advance past Eagles

INWOOD, W.Va. - No. 7 Jefferson knocked off No. 10 Hedgesville, 3-0, Thursday night in the semifinals of the Region II, Section 4 soccer tournament.

Courtney McCauley scored two goals, Gabby Carstens had a goal, Marin Ping and Melissa Clevenger each had an assist, and Laura McIlroy had six saves en route to her seventh shutout of the year for Jefferson (15-4-1).


Grace 4, Calvary 1

Jared Barnhart and Ryan Myers each had a goal and an assist, Jordan Hanft and Steven Rushing each scored a goal, A.J. Serafini had an assist and Danny Carver recorded 12 saves for Grace (15-2-1) in the MDCC playoff victory.


No. 5 McConnellsburg 2 Northern Bedford 0

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Lesley Umbrell had nine service points and Heather DeShong and Jade Anthony each added six service points for McConnellsburg in the 15-1, 15-3 victory. Kara Carmack had six kills, Lindsay Lininger and Steph Paylor each recorded four kills and Heidi Swope had 12 kill assists for McConnellsburg (19-1). JV: McConnellsburg, 2-0.

Hancock 3, Paw Paw 0

HANCOCK - Holly Piles had 10 service points, Christine Mellott had eight and Danielle Yost added six to lead Hancock over Paw Paw, 15-3, 15-4, 15-2.

Candace Golden and Carrie Beaver each had four service points and four kills, while Jodi Keefer had nine assists and Haley Bernard had six for Hancock (11-3). JV: Hancock, 2-1.

Middletown 3, FSK 0

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Kristin Young had 24 assists to lead Middletown over FSK, 15-7, 15-9, 15-7. Jill Martin had eight kills and five blocks and Ashley Fox had four kills for the Knights (10-3, 5-2).

No. 4 Thomas Johnson 3, Urbana 1

FREDERICK, Md. - The Patriots wrapped up the Central Maryland Conference title with the 15-0, 15-5, 12-15, 15-8 victory.

Lindsey Merchant had nine kills and eight blocks, Erin Maldo had five kills and 13 service points and Kate Martin had 34 assists and 10 digs for TJ (12-1, 7-0). JV: TJ, 2-0.

Mercersburg Academy 3 Martinsburg 0

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Anna Petry had 38 digs, Ashley Doughty had eight kills, Tricia Dewey had four blocks, Jessica Miga had three aces and Melissa McCartney had 15 set assists for the Blue Storm (10-6) in the 15-5, 15-12, 15-13 win.


HCC 3, Delaware Tech 0

DOVER, Del. - Melanie Whitt had 39 assists and eight digs as Hagerstown Community College swept Delaware Tech, 30-23, 30-21, 30-22. Emily Beecher had 22 digs and nine kills, Amanda Storm had 18 digs and 14 kills, Lauren Resh had 18 digs and Mandy Myers had 10 kills for HCC (20-14, 8-4).

Shippensburg 3, Shepherd 1

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Kelly Laughlin led Shippensburg with 20 kills, three aces and 25 digs and Alyssa Kilgore added 19 kills and three aces in a 30-26, 30-22, 21-30, 30-24 win over Shepherd. Michelle Doughty had 14 kills, 19 digs and three blocks in the match, while Amber Schmerfield had 57 assists, 18 digs and a block and Karen Gogal added four aces and three blocks for Shippensburg (4-23).

Shepherd falls to 24-8 with the loss.


Bridgewater 3, Shepherd 0

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The Shepherd women fell to 4-13 as Bridgewater shut out the Rams. Amy Ridgely recorded seven saves in goal for Shepherd. Scoring for Bridgewater were Diana Bolard, Sarah Pritchett and Nell Bodani.

Grades 3-4

Williamsport Ravens 33, Clear Spring Cardinals 6: Jesse Kemmerer, Will Bowen, Tyler Shank, Shawn Likely and Connor Arnone had a touchdown run apiece for the Ravens. Arnone added a two-point kick and Logan Hershberger and Zachary Eshelman had over 10 tackles each. Dalton Bailey ran for a touchdown for the Cardinals.

Boonsboro Colts 19, Hagerstown Chiefs 6: Dylan Leazier, A.J. Staley and Kurtis Lowery each had a touchdown run and Justin Lewis added an extra-point run for the Colts. Hunter Phillips ran for a touchdown for the Chiefs.

Grades 5-8

Smithsburg Patriots 20, Williamsport Vikings 7: Chad Brown ran for over 150 yards and scored three touchdowns for the Patriots. Chad Bikle had a TD run for the Vikings.

Smithsburg Jets 39, Hagerstown Packers 0: Josh Conway and Wes McKenen each scored two touchdowns and rushed for more than 100 yards, while Alex Akers and Thomas Morrisey each had a touchdown run and Troy Bradner added a two-point kick for the Jets.

Hagerstown Browns 25, Hagerstown Giants 0: Ross Carpenter led the Browns with two touchdowns, while Stephan McDaniel and Alec Nelson each had a TD run and Joshua Mentzer had an extra-point run.

Williamsport Bears 28, Hagerstown Dolphins 16: Matt Campbell and Colby McCauley each had two touchdowns and over 100 yards rushing, while Jesse Barnes added two two-point kicks for the undefeated Bears. Scoring on rushing TDs for the Dolphins were Marcellus Sumlin and Guido Roche, while Logan Kelso had two two-point kicks.
