Two sent to hospital after chemical spill

WILLIAMSPORT - Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a chemical spill at Garden State Tanning Monday night, Washington County Fire and Rescue Communications officials said.

The spill was reported at 9:36 p.m. at the tannery at 15717 Clear Spring Road, officials said.

By 10:45 p.m., two people had been taken to Washington County Hospital with injuries that were reported to be minor, officials said.

A man at the scene who identified himself as the plant manager confirmed that the Washington County Special Response Team was called to the incident.

He said he would have more information this morning. He refused to release any more details.

Employees stood outside the complex and waited while crews attended to the scene. Fire trucks, ambulances and other emergency vehicles were on hand.


Several employees said the spill contained a form of acid.

Garden State Tanning makes leather for automobiles. The company employs 1,140 people, according to the Hagerstown-Washington County Economic Development Commission's 2002 Business & Industry Directory.
