Durst takes lead role in Martinsburg win

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - After catching five passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns Friday night, Martinsburg wide receiver Blaine Durst contemplated if life as a Bulldog feels like being inside a video game.

"It really does," Durst said. "We can score at any time from any place on the field. It's pretty explosive."

Explosive doesn't begin to describe Martinsburg's offense, which continued its Playstation-esque domination by rolling up 430 yards of offense on 38 plays - an 11.3 yards-per-play average - in a 62-14 drubbing of Jefferson.

The Bulldogs, No. 1 in The Herald-Mail Super 7, have now scored 60 or more points in six straight games, and they did with their main offensive weapon, record-setting wideout Brandon Barrett, catching only two passes for 14 yards. Barrett did pass the 1,000-yard receiving mark, finishing with 1,009, but was played physically by Will Grantham most of the night.

""Will did an excellent job both halves, he did exactly what we wanted him to do," Jefferson coach Jay Kirby said. "We put Grantham on him man-to-man and put everyone else in zone. We wanted to be as physical as possible with (Barrett)."

Barrett still found ways to contribute, returning the opening kickoff 79 yards to the Jefferson 4 and setting up Jesse Keyser for the first of his three touchdowns on the night. Barrett also returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

With Barrett quieted as a receiver, Nate Sowers found Durst early and often Durst made catches of 34 and 32 yards, and his 4-yard touchdown catch that made the score 20-0 with 5:03 left in the first quarter. Sowers added a 36-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

"(Our receivers) get open, and Nate gets them the ball," Martinsburg coach Dave Walker said. "Blaine got himself open a couple times, and Nate got him the ball."

Sowers finished 14-for-20 for 248 yards and two TDs. Keyser had 107 yards on seven carries, with touchdowns of 4, 3 and 6 yards as the Bulldogs ran for 182 yards on 18 carries.
