Chambersburg's Schuler wins Mid-Penn cross country title

October 18, 2002

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The third time was the charm for Chambersburg's Kylee Schuler at the Mid-Penn Conference Cross Country Championships at Gettysburg High School Thursday.

For the first time in three tries this season, Schuler beat Cedar Cliff's highly touted Janelle Young. For the first time in three seasons, the Trojans junior also came away with the Class AAA girls' crown, topping the 146-runner field in 19 minutes, 11 seconds on the muddy 3.1-mile course. Young finished a distant second in 19:33.

"It was pretty messy, pretty deep up to your shins in water and mud," said Schuler, who placed 10th at Mid-Penns last year after taking second as a freshman. "I ran with (Young) for about a mile and a half and the pace felt slow, so I decided to pick it up and just pulled away from her. It was really nice winning."

Schuler's finish helped propel Chambersburg to second place in the 19-team standings with 139 points. Defending-champ Cumberland Valley ran away with the title with 54 points.

Next up for Schuler and the Trojans is the District 3 meet on Oct. 26 in Hershey.

"It was pretty nice beating (Young)," said Schuler, the 2000 district champ. "But I don't want it to get to my head or anything because I want to beat her at districts and stuff. But its gives me confidence."
