Trooper still in critial condition



A West Virginia State Police trooper who was shot Thursday night remained in critical condition Saturday at Washington County Hospital.

The next few days will be crucial for Trooper Robert Elswick, 31, who suffered a severe brain injury after being shot in the head, said Dr. Marc Kross, surgeon-in-chief of the hospital's Trauma Center.

"He's lucky to be alive," he said.

Elswick was shot while responding to a domestic violence call in Hedgesville, W.Va.

The man who allegedly fired the shot, David Eugene Munday, 37, is being held without bond at Eastern Regional Jail.




Motorcyclist escapes serious injury in crash



FREDERICK, Md. - A Frederick, Md., motorcyclist escaped serious injury Friday night when he wrecked while allegedly trying to elude police, Frederick Police said.

Rian James Edward Orwig, 28, of the 4300 block of Buckeystown Pike, was charged with fleeing and eluding police, driving under the influence of alcohol, theft, reckless driving and numerous other traffic violations, police said.

About 11:23 p.m., officers saw a high-performance motorcycle speeding on North Bentz Street. The driver sped away, reaching speeds of about 80 mph, but lost control a block later. The motorcycle slid about 150 feet and hit a parked car, police said.

Orwig was treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital and released, police said.
