Greencastle bank opens branch on Maugans Avenue

October 14, 2002

The First National Bank of Greencastle, Franklin County, Pa.'s oldest locally-owned bank, officially opened its Hagerstown office location with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 8. The bank branch opened for business on Sept. 23.

At the ribbon-cutting, Washington County Commissioners President Greg Snook, State Sen. Don Munson and The First National Bank of Greencastle's management provided remarks.

Snook and Munson presented respective county and state proclamations to First National Bank of Greencastle's bank management.

"We are pleased that The First National Bank of Greencastle has opened a branch in Washington County, and we welcome the services that a local community bank can offer," Snook said. "The Commissioners are sure that The First National Bank of Greencastle's success will play a part in the county's future economic growth.

"The First National Bank will make a welcome addition to Washington County's business community."

The branch, adjacent to I-81's Exit 9 (18233 Maugans Ave.), is opening with six employees, including a loan officer.

The First National Bank of Greencastle is the sole subsidiary of Tower Bancorp, Inc. (TOBC).

According to Jeff B. Shank, president and CEO, the decision to cross the state line into Maryland was logical.

"We have a very active client base in the Maugansville and Hagerstown area, and we felt that building a branch in this area would better serve our customers. We are confident that the residents of Washington County are looking forward to having a local community bank in their neighborhood where local decisions are made, and our staff are local residents."

First National Bank of Greencastle Chairman of the Board Kermit Hicks also addressed the gathering. "We have been working for nearly six years to make this full-service office location a reality. We are very pleased at the welcome that Washington County has given our bank."

The new Hagerstown branch is the eighth office location for the First National Bank of Greencastle. The First National Bank of Greencastle has seven other office locations in Greencastle, Chambersburg, Laurich Estates, Quincy, Shady Grove, Mercersburg and Waynesboro. The Hagerstown location is the bank's first Maryland branch.

The official ribbon used in the ribbon cutting was made of money, and the entire amount was donated to the Maugansville Volunteer Fire Department. Chamber of Commerce leaders, several elected officials, and community leaders welcomed the bank to Washington County.
