Area Roundup - Brunswick upsets Smithsburg in overtime

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Cassie Shortz scored the game-winning goal on a corner kick assist from Meghan Sherman with 20 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give Brunswick a 1-0 Monocacy Valley Athletic League win over No. 8 Smithsburg on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Kristen Ridlen had five saves in the shutout for the Railroaders (4-4-2). Lisa Belella had three saves for Smithsburg (6-4).

No. 2 Martinsburg 6, Goretti 2

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Natalie Minnich, Ashley Griffin, Laurel Bobo, Aubrey Minnich, Jessica Hallbaker and Kacie Keesecker each scored a goal for Martinsburg.

Melanie Costentino and Margot Weneck each scored for Goretti (1-13) on assists from Emily Favret and Erin Donoghue.

No. 5 SJPH 1, Bryn Mawr 0

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - Marta Merkel scored on an assist from Jen Baker with just three minutes reamaining in the game for St. John's-PH (10-2). Lindsey Weaver made three saves for the shutout.

No. 9 Walkersville 6, South 1

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Stephanie Byrns, Sara Rittelmeyer, Katherine Law, Cara Dudiak, Michelle Wright and Meredith Tehan each scored a goal to lead Walkersville (6-4, 4-3). Law added two assists and Sara Rittelmeyer, Cara Dudiak and Michelle Wright had one each in the victory.

Devon Steiner scored the only goal for South Hagerstown.

St. James 3 No. 10 Hedgesville 2

ST. JAMES - Jessica Greenberg scored the game winning goal for St. James (6-5-2), while Soja-Marie Morgens and Emily McCormack each added a goal and Katie Graham added an assist for the Saints.

Hedgesville's goals were scored by Samantha Baker and Leslie Kirk. Kim Beaulieu had seven saves for Hedgesville, while Kristen Digirolamo had eight saves for St. James.


No. 7 Jefferson 2, Goretti 1

Nick Roselius scored both goals for Jefferson, while Joe Humeas had an assist. Jay Gill scored on an assist from Joey Schierenburg for Goretti (5-8-1, 3-2). Pat McCullough recored 11 saves for the Gaels.

No. 9 Middletown 2 Brunswick 0

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Jonathan Kisas scored an unassisted goal and Andrew Harrell scored on an assist from Bobby Riggs to lead Middletown (6-3-1, 4-1-1) in the MVAL matchup. Danny Favarulo recorded four saves for his fourth shutout of the season. JV: Middletown, 4-0.

Broadfording 4, Faith 2

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Alan Myers had two goals and one assist to lead Broadfording to its first victory of the season. John Bishop scored a goal and assisted on two and Eric Higgins also scored for Broadfording (1-9-1, 1-8-1). Charlie Rodger and Jason Evans each scored a goal for Faith Christian.

Smithsburg 8, South 1

SMITHSBURG - Jeremy Spessard had three goals and two assists to lead Smithsburg. Joe Fox, Tim Gaines, Nick Bayer, Zack Fay and Russell Hoyt each added for Smithsburg (6-4-1, 3-3).

Emens Rho scored the lone goal for South.

SJPH 8, Highland View 0

FREDERICK, Md. - Stan Hess had four goals and one assist and Joe Potochek added two goals with three assists to lead St. John's-PH. Kevin Isaak and Jeremy Hess recorded a goal and an assist each and Fred Phelan had an assist. Phelan and Tommy Kelly combined for fours saves and the shutout for St. John's (6-5).

C. Valley 5, Waynesboro 0

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - Cumberland Valley scored all five of its goals in the first half, led by Blane Phillips' hat trick. Zach Galbrair and Ben Smith also scored goals for CV in the Mid-Penn Keystone Division matchup.

James Woodring had five saves for Waynesboro (6-7, 3-5).

FAIRFIELD, Pa. - Ashley Helfrick had 23 digs and three aces, Emilee Seville had six kills, Ali Kirk had nine service points, and Ashley Crider had 11 kill assists for James Buchanan (13-1) in its 15-5, 15-10 win.

No. 6 McConnellsburg 2 Chestnut Ridge 0

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Leslie Umbrell had eight service points for McConnellsburg in its 15-7, 15-6. Lindsay Lininger had three block kills and Heidi Swope had 11 assists for McConnellsburg.

No. 7 Middletown 3 Boonsboro 2

BOONSBORO - Amber Holian had 15 kills and 15 digs to lead Middletown to a 15-13, 12-15, 15-9, 10-15, 15-7 win over Boonsboro. Abby Burtner had 37 digs and Kristen Young had 47 assists for Middletown (7-1)

Jessie Ambrose had 11 kills and 17 assists, Claire Housekenecht had eight kills and 16 service points points, Sara Beth Williams had nine kills and six blocks and Kim Snavely had 13 points for Boonsboro (5-4). JV: Boonsboro, 2-0.

No. 10 North 3, FSK 0

Sarah Long had eight kills and four blocks to lead North over FSK, 15-8, 15-13, 15-4. Chrissy Ennis had 14 service points, Ashley Saylor had 11 service points and Sarah Staley had 15 assists for the Hubs (6-3). JV: North, 2-0.

South 3, Catoctin 0

CATOCTIN, Md. - Angie Dieterich had 21 service points, 10 assists and five kills as South swept Catoctin, 15-9, 16-14, 15-12. Brook Kane had nine service points, Kelly Renner had five service points and seven kills and Jamie Fowler had six assists and six kills to lead the Rebels (4-7, 3-4). JV: South, 2-0.
