Poffensberger sparks Leopards

The Smithsburg Leopards girls soccer team has gone with a lot of young players this year, because of heavy graduation from last year's state championship squad.

The young Smithsburg players continued to show improvement on Monday night as the Leopards pulled out a 2-1 victory over the North Hagerstown Hubs in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League at School Stadium.

Junior Kristen Poffenberger scored both goals for No. 8 Smithsburg (6-3, 2-2).

"We just have a great midfield and a great defense," Poffenberger said. "I just put the goals through. The midfield and the defense shut down the North players. They did their job. They left it to us and we just had to finish. We did our job. I think that we have a lot of potential. If we work together, we can be really awesome."

Smithsburg got on the scoreboard first just four minutes into the game when Poffenberger scored on an unassisted goal through the middle.

No. 6 North (7-3, 2-3) tied the game just two minutes before halftime when junior Emily Kelso scored on an unassisted goal on the left side.

The Leopards got the game-winning goal with 29 1/2 minutes remaining in the second half when Poffenberger scored from the right side on an assist by freshman Shannon Fowkes. Junior Cortney Kerns helped key the defense. Smithsburg senior goalie Lisa Belella made 10 saves.

"The victory was really good," Kerns said. "This was a big win for us. North is a real good quality team. I was looking forward to playing them. All of us are getting used to each other. We are communicating better and we are doing what we need to do."

"We just kept digging deep, even when we had some tired players on the field," Fowkes said. "I think that we are a young team which is maturing and believing in each other."

JV: North, 5-0.
