Anniversaries for Oct. 5

The Leathermans

Mr. and Mrs. James Elwood Leatherman of Middletown, Md., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Friday, Sept. 13, 2002. They were honored at a dinner hosted by their children. Flowers were displayed at Sunday services at Emmanuel Baptist Temple of Hagerstown in recognition of the occasion.

The Leathermans were married Sept. 13, 1952, by the Rev. Basil Grossnickle at Grossnickle Church of the Brethren.

Mrs. Leatherman is the former Gladys Willard. She is a homemaker and was employed by Reeders Nursing Home in Boonsboro as a certified nursing assistant.

Mr. Leatherman worked in agri-business for the past 50 years. He is employed by Char-Mar Farms in Jefferson, Md., where he has worked for the past 24 years.


The Leathermans have four children, James Leatherman of Boonsboro, Dennis Leatherman of Middletown, Susan Licht of Reeseville, Wis., and the late Allen Leatherman. They have seven grandchildren.

The Mowens

Donald and Linda Mowen of Chambersburg, Pa., celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a belated honeymoon at Caesars Pocono Cove Haven Resort in Lakeville, Pa.

The Mowens were married Sept. 10, 1977, at Broadfording Church of God in Hagerstown by the Rev. Raymond Renner, now deceased.

Mrs. Mowen is the daughter of Doris E. Hose of Hagerstown and the late Harvey M. Hose. She is employed by Menno Haven Nursing Home in Chambersburg.

Mr. Mowen is the son of Lester E. and Annabelle Mowen of Hagerstown. He is employed at Maryland Correctional Institute in Hagerstown.

They have two sons, Kurtis S. Mowen and Andrew S. Mowen.

The Alsips

Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence N. Alsip Jr. of Maugansville celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Sunday, July 28, 2002. The affair was held on The Terrace in Hagerstown at the home of their son and daughter-in-law, Chip and Nicole Alsip. More than 20 friends and relatives attended.

The couple was married, July 28, 1962, at First Christian Church in Hagerstown.

Mrs. Alsip, the former Sylvia Ocker, is the daughter of Russell Ocker of Maugansville and the late Ruby Ocker.

Mr. Alsip, son of Lawrence N. Alsip Sr. of State Line, Pa., and the late Ida Bernice Alsip, retired from the Hagerstown Fire Department in 2001 where he was employed as a driver for Engine Company No. 1 for 23 years.
