Toddler hospitalized after being run over by a car

October 07, 2002

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A 2-year-old girl was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital Sunday night after being run over by a car in a driveway, West Virginia State Police said.

Barry Swift, 19, of Gerrardstown, W.Va., pulled into the driveway of his brother's house on Charge Court, which is located off Shape Charge Road near U.S. 11 north, said Senior Trooper M.M. Kingery.

While Swift's car was in the driveway, his niece climbed on the back bumper of the car, said Kingery.

Swift apparently did not know the baby was on the bumper, Kingery said. When he backed out of the driveway a short time later, he ran over the baby, Kingery said.

Kingery said he did not know the extent of the baby's injuries. The incident occurred at 6:08 p.m.

A hospital spokesperson said the girl was in critical condition Sunday night.
