Area Roundup - Czaja leads No. 6 'Dogs past Blue Storm

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Cassie Czaja turned in a hat trick for No. 6 Martinsburg, scoring three second-half goals as the Bulldogs (7-1-4) came back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to win 5-1 Wednesday night. Natalie Minnich and Kacie Keesecker each added a goal for Martinsburg.

Mercersburg (1-7-1) took the early lead on Jessie Tippen's goal, scored off a throw-in from Jessie Malone. Stephanie Turner made 15 saves for the Blue Storm.

No. 9 Clear Spring 1, Brunswick 1


CLEAR SPRING - Alicia Dunaher scored the only Brunswick goal, while Christen Ridlen made 11 saves for the Blazers in the double-overtime game. Lindsey Keyton tied the game for Clear Spring and Amy Mills had 17 saves. JV: Clear Spring, 2-0.

No. 2 North 4, Goretti 0


Mikael Tigrett, Ben McAbee and Brandon Bell each had a goal and an assist for North (10-1), while Austin Lucas scored added the other goal. North outshot Goretti 26-3. Hubs keeper Ryne Powell recorded two saves for the shutout. JV: North 1, Goretti 1.

No. 4 Williamsport 1, Middletown 1


MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Kevin Buckley scored the lone goal for Middletown (4-3-1) on an assist by Ryan Lingg. Ben Jordan scored unassisted for Williamsport (7-1-1). Middletown's Danny Favarulo and Williamsport's Ryan Martin each four saves in goal and both teams took six shots in the double-overtime tie. JV: Middletown, 6-0.

No. 6 Hedgesville 2, Mercersburg 1


MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Luke Mansfield and Bryan Miller each scored a goal for Hedgesville, while Travis Hines had six saves in the win. Eric Rahauser scored a goal for Mercersburg (3-3-2) on an assist from Austin Mort, while Andrew Rohman had seven saves. JV: Hedgesville, 5-1.

OAKTON, Va. - Eric Hill scored an unassisted goal for Flint Hill for the only score of the game. Ali Smith recorded nine saves for St. James (3-7-1), which was outshot, 10-4.

No. 3 Hedgesville sweeps


HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Ashley Copenhaver had six kills, two blocks and 10 service points to lead Hedgesville (24-2-3) to a pair of wins. The Eagles beat Mercersburg 15-1, 15-6, and Berkeley Springs, 15-0, 15-7. Tracey Regalbuto added 14 assists and 11 service points and Keri Jackson had five kills and 10 service points for Hedgesville.

Mercersburg (6-3) knocked off Berkeley Springs 16-14, 15-6 as Jessica Miga had 10 digs, Melissa McCartney had eight kills, and Caity Barnes had eight service points.

LOYSBURG, Pa. - Jade Anthony had eight service points and four kills, Kara Carmack had eight kills and Heidi Swope had 13 kills assists for McConnellsburg (10-0) in its 15-4, 15-7 win.

WILLIAMSPORT - Robbie Thompson threw for 106 yards and two touchdowns to lead North Hagerstown. Matt Ridenour scored two touchdowns and William Younger, Kevin Mendonca and Leon Finley each scored one for the Hubs (4-1).

Smithsburg 24, Catoctin 19


Matt Feiser scored three touchdowns for Smithsburg (2-1-1) in the win over Catoctin (1-3). Josh Daniels threw a touchdown to Abe Nehemiahs for Smithsburg.

Boonsboro 28, FSK 26


Jimmy Griffin scored the game-tying touchdown and the game-winning conversion for Boonsboro. He also scored two other touchdowns on the night. Blaec Ramos had 80 yards rushing and James Barnes ran for 79 yards and a touchdown for Boonsboro.

South 19, Walkersville 14


WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Mark Bryan scored on a 55-yard touchdown run and Cody Grove scored on a 20-yarder for South Hagerstown. Bryan also threw a touchdown to Travis Gatrell for 60 yards for the Rebels (3-1-1).

Smithsburg 44, North 13


Justin Thompson rushed for five touchdowns and Josh Sawyer ran for another score for Smithsburg (3-1).

Jarell Rodriquez was 11 of 20 passing for 195 yards and two touchdowns for North.

Boonsboro 22, FSK 0


UNION BRIDGE, Md. - Matt Roderick and Adam Rippeon both scored on touchdown runs while Matt Byers had a 17-yard touchdown reception for Boonsboro (3-0-1). Jeremiah Mills had eight tackles and Jon Jaron had two sacks and two fumble recoveries for the Warriors.

Mike Zimmerman scored a touchdown and Chad Dutrow threw a 39-yard touchdown to Shane Grunseth for Hedgesville (2-3).

BALTIMORE - Josh Barnhart scored on an assist from Chris Lantz to help Hagerstown Community College crack the scoreboard in a Maryland JuCo Conference loss to Essex.

Essex led 3-0 at the half.

The Black Knights outshot the Hawks (5-4) 28-6 as HCC keeper Brando Rethmeyer made 13 saves.

Grier leads Jacksonville


ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Jacksonville University's Ashley Grier, a Smithsburg High graduate, tied for second in the Lady Falcon Invitational at the Riviera Country Club this week. She shot 4-over par on the par-73 course with two rounds of 75. Jacksonville finished in a tie for second place behind Florida Southern in the 11-team field.
