No SJIT in 2003

September 26, 2002|by MARK KELLER

For 29 years, tiny St. James school has seen plenty of big-name players set foot on its basketball court.

Names like Scott and Stackhouse, Mercer and McGrady have shown their stuff as high school players in the St. James Invitational Tournament before moving on to big-time college programs or right to the pros.

There will be no 30th anniversary for the three-day showcase, however. The school has cancelled the upcoming tournament, which was scheduled for Feb. 13-15, 2003.

St. James athletic director Paul Salit said the tournament was cancelled for "a bunch of reasons" but would not comment further Wednesday night. Salit said the school's headmaster, the Rev. Dr. D. Stuart Dunnan, will issue a press release today regarding the cancellation.
