UNION BRIDGE, Md. - Katy Powell had seven kills and three blocks Monday to lead Smithsburg to a 15-5, 15-8, 15-9 sweep of Francis Scott Key. Katie Franklin had 14 assists and Brittany Biser and Kenzie Bowen each had seven service points to lead Smithsburg (11-0, 6-0). JV: FSK 2-1 (9-15, 15-8, 15-9)

ELLIOTTSBURG, Pa. - James Buchanan remained undefeated by defeating West Perry, 15-7, 15-10. Ashley Helfrick had 18 digs, Emily Seville had nine service points and four aces, Abby Stoner had eight kills and three blocks and Lindsay Crider had 19 kill assists and nine service points for James Buchanan (9-0, 7-0).

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Ashley Fox had five kills and two aces to lead Middletown over Walkersville, 15-7, 15-9, 9-15, 15-9. Allison Jarkey had two kills and four aces and Jill Martin had nine digs and four kills for the Knights (5-1, 2-1 MVAL).

THURMOUNT, Md. - Boonsboro defeated Catoctin in straight sets, 15-11, 15-7, 15-6. Sarah Harris had four kills, four blocks and seven service points, Caroline Woodhams had 10 service points, three aces and nine assists and Jessie Ambrose had 10 service points, eight assists, five kills and four saves for the Warriors (4-2).

Amanda Lindsay had 10 assists, Kelly Stiles had six service points, Kim Stiles had three saves and Jen O'Neil had three spikes for Catoctin (2-3). JV: Boonsboro, 2-1 (15-8, 15-7)

FREDERICK, Md. - Kate Martin had 42 assists, two aces and three digs, Erin Maldo had 20 kills. 11 digs and five aces, Lindsey Merchant had eight kills and eight blocks and Jessica Goode had eight kills, six aces and nine digs as Thomas Johnson (3-1) defeated Liberty, 15-4, 5-15, 15-11, 6-15, 15-13. JV: Liberty, 8-15, 15-8, 15-9.

Mikael Tigrett scored two goals to lead North over Francis Scott Key for an Monocacy Valley Athletic League win. Ben McAbee and Brandon Bell each had a goal and an assist for the Hubs (7-1, 4-0).

BOONSBORO - Jonathan Kisas lead Middletown with four goals and Mark Bucheimer also scored a goal. Chris Greene and Shane McCarrick each had assists for the Knights (4-3).

No. 9 St. John's-PH 2, Palotti 1


FREDERICK, Md. - Liz Brokaw and Gillian Keller each scored goals and Madison Keller had an assist to lead St. John's (6-2). Michelle Burdette had seven saves in the victory.

Walkersville 2, Boonsboro 0


WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Tristian Flook and Katherine Law each scored goals to lead Walkersville (4-2, 2-1). Anna Lebo had four saves in the shutout. Haley Burtner had six saves for Boonsboro. JV: Boonsboro 3-0

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Jessica Malone scored two goals, Katie Proudman, Jess Tippen and Shelby Hoffman each scored one goal while Stephanie Harris made six saves in the first half and Stephanie Turner made four saves in the second half for Mercersburg Academy (1-4-1). Margot Weneck made 17 saves for St. Maria Goretti (1-7).

Clear Spring 5, South 0


Lidsey Keyton had two goals and two assists, Twanya Blair had two goals and Lauren Ebersole had one goal and one assist as Clear Spring (4-2) defeated host South Hagerstown. Amy Mills had her fourth shutout for Clear Spring while Brianne Jamison had eight saves for South. JV: Clear Spring (3-1), 8-1.

FREDERICK, Md. - Samantha Wilson scored two goals, Jennifer Thackson had a goal and an assist, Katie Spencer had two assist, and Lindsay Hoffman, Andrea Zamudio, Emily Sykes, Kristin Kraemer each had one goal for Thomas Johnson (4-0, 1-0 CMC). Erin Lathrop had three saves for her fourth straight shutout.

Whims shares WVC honors


PRINCETON, W.Va. - Judy Whims of Shepherd and Kirstin Hearn of Wheeling Jesuit are the WVIAC Volleyball Players of the Week for Sept. 16-22.

Whims recorded 41 kills as Shepherd won three league contests last week, while Hearn helped WJU to six straight wins and the championship of the Millersville/Dutch Country Invitational.

Whims had a hitting percentage of .344 as the Rams swept Salem International, Fairmont State, and WVU-Tech. The Frederick, Md., senior also added 32 digs and six total blocks. The 5-9 outside hitter had a team-high 18 kills in the victory against Fairmont State.
