Midwest food distributor is sold to Md. firm

September 16, 2002

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - Lady Baltimore Foods Inc., a wholesale firm with institutional customers in six states, announced it will sell its assets to U.S. Foodservice of Columbia, Md.

The sale price was not disclosed.

Lady Baltimore is "basically a big version of a mom-and-pop operation," said Clifford Cohen, an attorney for the company. "And in the global economy, it was very difficult for it to compete effectively."

The deal was expected to close in the next two months, Cohen said.

Lady Baltimore markets and distributes more than 14,000 food items and kitchen supplies to institutional customers, including restaurants, schools and hospitals.

For the fiscal year ending June 2001, revenues were about $180 million.

U.S. Foodservice was formerly known as JP Foodservice. It's the second largest food service distributor in the United States after Sysco.

Its sales in 2001 were $12.1 billion. The company has about 34,000 employees.
