Mail Call for 9/13

September 16, 2002

"I am looking for anyone who worked on the Western Maryland Railroad along the current Rail-Trail route from Big Pool to Peri Junction. Call Tom Palmer at Fort Frederick State Park at 301-842-2155. We would like to meet with you and discuss what went along there and get some historical information. We are interested in locating some ruined buildings and other artifacts."

"I want to publicly thank WJEJ for the beautiful patriotic music that they had on the radio on Sept. 11. I think if there was an Academy Award presented to a radio station, they would be at the top of the list right now. Thank you so much, WJEJ, your managers and your disc jockeys."

"I don't live in Funkstown, but I always look forward to reading Susie Hoffman's stories about what is going on around Funkstown and her To Do List. I really enjoy her writing and I think she should keep up the good work. God bless you, Susie."

"I think that all fireworks displays should be banned in Hagerstown and the money wasted should be used for food and health services for the needy."

"Long Meadow Shopping Center needs stores attractive enough to cause people to make it their destination. For example, a Value City store, Olive Garden Restaurant and a Safeway Store."

"To the sports editor. This is the second time in a row you have not posted the Williamsport High School girls JV volleyball scores. Just so the public knows, like you have printed Smithsburg, South's and North's and everyone else's, that JV won last week against Walkersville and Tuesday night against North High. Now we have a game on Thursday evening against Clear Spring. I hope that you will keep updating the Williamsport JV team like you do the rest of the county."

"When is Washington County going to wake up and put a water ban on? You know, it's really sad and scary with everyone watering their flowers and their lawns, you don't have to do that. If you have to wash your vehicle, take it to a car wash, where they use recycled water."

"I was wondering if anyone could confirm that Ted Kennedy has a new dog named 'Splash.'"

"I was reading the Mail Call where someone found a camera at National Yellowstone National Park and recently had the pictures developed. He said there was a man fishing and he was wearing a Pinesburg T-shirt. I don't know if he said baseball or softball champs of 1988. You can call the local Pinesburg or Hub City Softball Division at Halfway Park if it was softball."

"The Board of Education should be ashamed of themselves for giving Sharpsburg Elementary full day kindergarten then pulling it away only a few days before school started. Of course, now the principal is taking all the heat and it wasn't her fault. The Board of Education needs to step up to the plate publicly and admit that they made a mistake and they weren't prepared for all-day kindergarten even though they offered it. Now the situation is now, many of the children are going all day because they are working them into other classrooms, but many were not allowed. It's not fair and now we have a war going on with the parents who didn't get their kids in."

"Thank you for this opportunity to ask Mr. Howard why he doesn't tell Hagerstown how much money he was given from us taxpayers. I understand he is a Sunday school teacher. That is hard to believe when he has allowed this bitterness to go on this long."

"Potato candy is a piece of cake to make. Start with some ice cold mashed potatoes (at least three cups) add milk and powdered sugar until you get a dough like consistency. My grandmother used to use a rolling pin to get the dough flat, but I prefer to use my hands and do it like you would pizza dough, just instead of circle, I do a 13 x 9 rectangle. Smooth over some creamy peanut butter of your choosing, not more than it would take to not see white underneath it. Then, roll it up slowly (so it doesn't tear) and cut the roll into the size pieces you want. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Dust it with powdered sugar before serving. It's absolutely great!"

"I found a dog on Bower Avenue off of Halfway. The dog didn't have a collar, short sort of light blond, male, looks like he is fixed, long hair on his ears. Looks like a miniature golden retriever, but he is real small and has a black spot on his tongue. If anyone is interested in him before we send him to the SPCA, call 301-582-1613."

"A set of ignition keys and a remote for a vehicle were found and turned into the dealer's service department. The person who lost them with their keys will know the type of vehicle, so you can claim it at your dealer."

"In response to the person who wanted to know why our president is against drought aid. He isn't, there is adequate drought aid in the farm bill. The Democrats knew that also, but are always trying to spend our hard-earned money."

"I attended the Elvis Lives Concert in downtown Hagerstown, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. I just wanted to say what a wonderful time my family and I had. We enjoyed all four Elvis impersonators. I would like to commend everyone who had a hand in arranging this event. Everyone there seemed to be having a good time. I look forward to attending again next year. Thank you, thank you very much."
