No appeals filed for construction of communications tower

September 16, 2002|by LAURA ERNDE

Construction of a 199-foot communications tower in an apple orchard off Smithsburg Pike can begin now that time has run out for a court appeal.

The Washington County Board of Zoning Appeals voted 3-2 in July to approve the tower on John R. Martin's Ivy Hill Farm.

Neighbors who opposed the tower had until this week to file an appeal in Washington County Circuit Court.

Windy Haven Road resident Ralph Ward, who had organized residents to fight the tower, decided not to appeal, said his attorney, Michael Schaefer of Hagers-town.

Shenandoah Mobile Co. is building the tower for Sprint, but at least two other cell phone carriers have expressed interest in using the tower, Project Manager Leonard Greisz said.
