Poll workers needed for Nov. 5th election

September 13, 2002|by ANDREA ROWLAND

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Additional poll workers are needed in Berkeley County for the upcoming election, County Clerk John W. Small Jr. told the Berkeley County Commissioners on Thursday.

The commissioners voted to allow Small and his staff members to fill 12 vacant Republican party positions and five vacant Democratic party positions.

Small told the commissioners that a preacher at a Berkeley County church that doubles as a polling place wants to enforce a dress code for election workers there.

The preacher thinks some poll workers report for duty too scantily clad, Small said.

"Leave your fig leaf at the door," chuckled Commissioner John Wright.

The preacher has no authority to institute a dress code or enforce it at the election hall/church, County Attorney Norwood Bentley III said.
